What is the minimum order quantity for custom printed window film from Chinese manufacturers?

Published

The minimum order quantity for custom printed window film from FancyFix runs from one roll to 40,000 meters, and two things set the figure: which printing process your pattern needs, and how deep the customisation goes. A pattern that can be printed without a plate starts at one roll. A pattern that needs a new plate is quoted in meters.

Why two orders for "custom printed window film" come back with two different minimums

The plate is the dividing line between a low minimum and a high one. A plate is the engraved roller that carries a texture or a pattern through the machine printing process, and cutting one costs a fixed amount and a fixed stretch of calendar time no matter how much film is then printed from it. A supplier that cuts a plate for you has to spread that cost over a run length, which is why the minimum arrives in meters rather than in rolls.

The printing process behind FancyFix stained glass window film needs no plate at all, so a single roll is a real production order on that line. Once a design has proved itself in a buyer's own channel, the same design can move onto the volume printing process to bring the unit cost down — so a short trial does not lock a brand into the expensive route for the life of the pattern.

On the embossed, 3D-refraction and colour-printed static cling lines, the test is narrower: an existing FancyFix texture needs no new plate, and a texture a buyer asks us to develop does. Many buyers who think they are commissioning a custom print are in fact asking for an existing texture with their own colours and their own pack, which is the cheaper of the two requests and worth saying out loud in an RFQ.

What a minimum looks like, line by line

FancyFix window film line Minimum order
Stained glass window film From one roll
Static cling window film, embossed 400 meters
Static cling window film, printed 800 to 1,000 meters
Static cling window film, eco-grade 3,000 to 20,000 meters
Adhesive solar control window film 3,000 meters

Most FancyFix stock sits inside the figures above, and a buyer can also specify a film outside them, which is produced to order. Wall coverings, floor and furniture film and craft vinyl are quoted off their own minimums rather than these, and those figures sit with their own categories in the FancyFix FAQ.

Changing the packaging is not the same request as commissioning a pattern

Three requests get called "custom" in an RFQ, and they carry three different minimums. The first is a FancyFix catalogue pattern in your own pack and your own cut sizes: no plate, so the entry quantity is the lowest of the three. The second is your own colours or your own design file on a texture FancyFix already runs: a printing job, with no new plate to pay for. The third is a texture or a colour developed from scratch for you, which carries either a plate or a dedicated colour run, and sits at the top of the range.

Naming which of the three you want in the first email is what gets a usable number back, because a supplier who cannot tell them apart has to quote the most expensive one to stay safe. What each model changes about who owns the design is set out in private label vs OEM vs distribution.

Per pattern, or per order

A minimum order quantity is quoted per product line and per specification, not as one lump figure for the whole purchase order, so a buyer taking two lines on one order meets each line's minimum separately. A first order drawn from FancyFix local stock works differently and is the route most trial programmes take: it starts at one carton, roughly 40 to 50 rolls, and one carton can hold several different patterns rather than one.

Ordering by the carton is possible because FancyFix holds local stock in CA, PA, IL and GA in the United States, plus Germany, the UK and Australia, so a trial assortment does not have to wait on a container. Terms for stocked lines are set out on the wholesale and distribution page.

The lead time that comes with each tier

Step FancyFix window
Sample from stock 3 to 5 days
Sample in custom sizes and packaging 7 to 15 days
Sample when a new plate is cut 25 to 35 days
Sample in a special material 10 to 20 days
Production, standard window film 30 to 35 days
Production, custom printing 35 to 45 days
Production, large-batch project 40 to 60 days

A high minimum and a long sampling window usually arrive together, because both are caused by the same plate. A buyer planning a season should read the two tables as one calendar rather than two, and place the plate-cutting step before the date the shelf has to be filled.

What to send to get your exact figure

  • Which window film line — stained glass, static cling (embossed, 3D refraction or printed), adhesive solar control, or safety.
  • Whose pattern — a FancyFix catalogue design, your own design file on an existing texture, or a texture developed for you.
  • Cut sizes and pack format — roll width and length, core, and whether the pack is retail or project.
  • Which market — so the documentation set and the labelling are quoted with the film rather than after it.
  • Stock or production — whether the first order comes out of local stock or off the line.

The widths, lengths, cores and pack builds a window film order can specify are listed line by line in retail roll or project roll, and the private-label route behind these figures is described on the private label and OEM page.

FAQ

Does the minimum order quantity apply per pattern, or to the whole order?

A FancyFix minimum order quantity applies per product line and per specification, so an order covering two lines meets each line's minimum on its own rather than adding them together. An order drawn from local stock is the exception: it is counted in cartons, and one carton can mix patterns.

Can a trial order mix several patterns?

Yes, when the order comes out of FancyFix local stock — the stocking points in the United States, Germany, the UK and Australia ship by the carton, and a carton can carry several patterns, which is what makes a stocked line workable for testing a range. A printed run off the line is different: it is produced pattern by pattern, so each pattern meets its own minimum.

Why do Chinese window film manufacturers quote such different minimums for the same product?

Different minimums for the same-sounding product usually mean the suppliers are quoting different production routes. A plate-based machine printing route spreads a fixed plate cost over a run and lands in the thousands of meters; a printing route that needs no plate can start at one roll. Asking which route a figure assumes turns two incomparable numbers into a comparison.
