How Persistent Support Won a U.S. Wallpaper Brand's Window Film Business

Published Last updated

A U.S. wallpaper brand with a strong design name had never bought window film from China, and their incumbent supplier was well ahead of us on design. They wanted to start small, at the quality and packaging standard a supermarket shelf demands. FancyFix quoted more than a hundred designs, loosened terms so the first order could stay small, and got samples approved before any full run. FancyFix is now one of their main window film suppliers.

Background

The client is a U.S. wallpaper brand with a solid reputation for design, production, and sales. Although their wallpaper products are well recognized, they had not yet sourced window films from China, preferring to purchase locally in the U.S. or import from Europe and Japan.

The client's challenges

  • Strong competition. Their existing supplier was an established figure in the window film industry, and our product designs initially had a noticeable gap in comparison.
  • Low initial order quantity. The customer was just starting to explore the window film market and wanted to begin with small test quantities.
  • High quality standards. Because their products are sold in supermarkets, they had stringent requirements for product quality and packaging aesthetics.
  • Uncertain product selection. Since the customer hadn't yet scaled their sales, there was uncertainty about which designs would perform in the market.
  • Two people reviewing decorative film and textured glass samples laid across a showroom table, with sample rolls shelved behind them.

What a small first order actually means in meters

A small first order of FancyFix window film starts at one roll, and which product line the assortment runs on is what decides that figure — not negotiation. Minimum order quantities by product type:

Product line Minimum first order
Stained glass window film (print route) From one roll
Embossed static cling window film 400 meters
Printed static cling window film 800 to 1,000 meters
Eco-grade static cling window film 3,000 to 20,000 meters
Adhesive solar control window film 3,000 meters
Peel-and-stick wallpaper and furniture film 2,000 to 3,000 meters from stock, or 40,000 meters when the material is not in stock

The spread across those lines is why a brand new to window film can put a wide assortment on a shelf without committing volume to any single design. One roll of a stained glass pattern is a shelf test; the adhesive solar control line's minimum is a programme commitment. Choosing the line therefore decides how small a first order can be, and that choice is made before a quote is issued rather than after it.

Our solutions

  • Consistent, patient follow-up. FancyFix maintained regular communication and responded quickly to the customer's evolving needs — at one point providing quotes for over 100 different designs.
  • Flexible early terms. To make the initial collaboration easy, we adjusted our terms so the customer could test multiple designs in a small first order.
  • Accelerated production. We expedited production to help the customer launch their products more quickly.
  • Pre-production sample approval. Before mass production, we sent samples for the customer's final approval, ensuring they were satisfied before any full-scale run.
  • A designer checking a small trial sample against printed pattern sheets, with sample rolls and retail boxes ready beside her.

Why more than a hundred designs could be quoted at once

Stained glass window film is made by a printing process that needs no plate, so a single roll of a new pattern can be produced and a hundred patterns carry no plate charges between them. Printed static cling window film uses a press process instead, which suits large runs and starts at a meterage rather than at a single roll. One design can be produced either way: a brand can test a pattern on the print route, and once that pattern proves itself at retail, move the same design to the press route for volume, which cuts the cost of the run substantially.

The two routes also build differently, which matters to a buyer specifying a shelf product. Stained glass window film measures 0.3 to 0.5 mm with its liner and 0.28 to 0.38 mm without it, while printed static cling window film measures 0.18 to 0.25 mm with its liner. Both are a PVC face film on a PET release film, and stained glass window film can also be supplied on a coated-paper backing.

Sample timing splits the same way, and FancyFix quotes four separate clocks rather than one lead time: 3 to 5 days for a sample of existing stock, 7 to 15 days for a custom size or custom packaging sample, 25 to 35 days when a new pattern plate has to be cut, and 10 to 20 days for a special material. A promise to approve samples before mass production is only worth the clock it sits on, so the clock is named in the quote.

The results

Our persistent service and tailored support helped us overcome the challenges and earn the customer's trust. This led to us becoming one of their main suppliers of window film products.

The specification a supermarket pack is built on

Stained glass window film ships at a maximum width of 120 cm, with regular shipped widths of 45, 60, 90 and 120 cm, no maximum roll length, and common shipped lengths of 90, 180 and 200 cm. The film applies by static cling rather than by adhesive, so a roll goes on without glue — the difference between static cling and low-tack adhesive film is set out separately. Most FancyFix stock falls within these regular parameters, and a buyer who needs a width, a length or a thickness outside them can have it made to order.

A retail pack and a project pack are built from different components, and a supermarket programme takes the retail build: an inner paper core, shrink film, a label, an inner box, an outer carton, and a pallet. A project roll instead takes a 3-inch paper core with optional end plugs, shrink film, a label, a kraft carton, and a pallet. The inner box is what turns a bare roll into a shelf unit, which is why packaging aesthetics is specified with the order rather than settled at the loading dock; the widths, cores and pack builds are listed in full here.

Compliance documentation and test reports are prepared for the buyer's market and product line, built per order rather than published as a fixed list, and FancyFix can issue the reports in its own entity when a programme requires it. FancyFix product already sits on the shelves of the world's most compliance-strict retail chains, under those retailers' own brands. For how a private-label pack is produced to a buyer's brand with no FancyFix marks, see the private label and OEM page.

Through consistent communication, flexibility, and a commitment to meeting the customer's needs, we built a strong, long-term partnership — even in a highly competitive market.
